Week in Review: Local Man Charged in LIRR Disability Scam, Lions Head to County Finals

A West Islip man is among ten Long Island Railroad retirees charged in Manhattan Federal Court Tuesday in an alleged decade-long scheme to collect fraudulent disability pensions, Newsday reports.

Thomas Delalla, 53, is accused of partaking in "strenuous and athletic actions" while collecting combined disability and pension payments of more than $10,000 a month, prosecutor Dayna Perry said Tuesday. Delalla is one of more than a dozen employees alleged to have racked up thousands of overtime hours to boost their LIRR pensions before claiming a phony disability.

West Islip’s run to a ninth straight Suffolk County Championship continues as the Lions defeated Sachem North 10-5 on Friday at West Islip High School.

The win moves top-seeded West Islip (17-1) into the Class A County finals on Wednesday at Stony Brook University where they will face a familiar foe in No. 3 Ward Melville (15-3). Sachem North finishes the season at 13-5.

For the third consecutive year, the West Islip girls lacrosse team has it season end at the hands of Bay Shore as the Marauders defeated the Lions 19-10 in a semi-final playoff game. West Islip finishes the season 12-7.
