Each week, the West Islip Public Library plays host to numerous activities and unique events for its residents.  Whether it's for a child, tween, teen, adult or senior, there's always something for everyone.

Every Monday West Islip Patch will provide a list of all the happenings that the library is offering.

Monday, Jan. 31

Shoe Drive (All day & week)- The West Islip Involved Teen Council is running a shoe drive until Feb. 5.   All types of shoes are welcome and appreciated.  Please be sure all donations are in decent shape before tossing them in the bins across from the Circulation Desk.  Tie laces together or attach shoes by rubber band.

Tuesday, Feb. 1

eReader Roundtable (7-9 p.m.) - Come to the library for a roundtable discussion on these hot, new electronics, including how to download eBooks from Live-brary.com. Don't forget your eReader. Limit: 20. 

Culture Night: South Asia (7-9 p.m.) - Join West Islip High School student Alia Rafiq and friends and learn Asian cultural dances (similar to the film "Slumdog Millionaire"), apply henna and taste samples of exotic South Asian foods.

Wednesday, Feb. 2

Blood Pressure Screening (2-3 p.m.) - This community service is brought to you through the auspices of Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter's office and the Consolation Residence nursing staff.

Asian Brush Calligraphy (7-9 p.m.) - Ring in the Chinese New Year with the ancient technique of East Asian brush calligraphy. This skill has been considered part art form and part mediation. Atendees will learn how to grind ink, hold a brush, and apply basic brushstrokes, as well as how to respect the “four treasures”: brush, ink stick, ink stone, and paper. (Participants may bring their own brush calligraphy kit.)

Thursday, Feb. 3

Accupressure Facelift (7-9 p.m.) - Learn the Chinese method of facial toning and self-massage that will help you look and feel younger, relieve headaches and improve digestion.  Everyone who attends will be led through a step-by-step series of exercises, and will also receive a written copy of the instructions - with illustrations.  Limit: 26

Friday, Feb. 4

Senior fitness classes (11 a.m.-noon): This is a series of gentle exercises with Vicki Luckman geared toward increasing range of motion and flexibility. Bring 1-3 lb. hand weights, a water bottle, and a face towel.  Fee: $15.  Limit: 40..

Chess Workshop (4:45-5:45, West Islip Library): Regardless of player level, all are welcome.  Classes are $20.  Grades: K-6.
