This Week at the West Islip Public Library

A list of activities held at the library for the week of November 15, 2010.

Each week, the West Islip Public Library plays host to numerous activities and unique events for its residents.  Whether it's for a child, tween, teen, adult or senior, there's always something for everyone.

Every Monday, West Islip Patch will provide a list of all the happenings at the library for the week.

Monday, November 15

Knitting Club (7-9 p.m.) - Bring knitting needles, a pattern and yarn and share your knitting knowledge with others. This is an open group. Hazel Grefig will be on hand when possible.

Advanced Battle of the Books Information Meeting Monday (5-6 p.m.) -   Students will read three official Battle books, remember as many details as they can, then compete in a trivia contest against other Suffolk County libraries.  Come to this meeting to learn more about Advanced Battle and check out the books.  The official contest at Sachem will take place on April 29.  Grades: 9-12

Thanksgiving Cup Cakes (4:30-5 p.m., 5:15-5:45 p.m.) - Decorate delicious cupcakes, then take them home for dessert.  Fee: $2.50. Limit: 25.  Grades: K-3.    

Tuesday, November 16

Girls Night Out: Do-it-Yourself Home Improvements (7-9 p.m.) -
This Home Improvement Series overview class will help ladies understand some of the most basic repairs that every nearly every homeowner will face. It will touch on basic carpentry and plumbing, and includes effective energy-saving tips.

Harry Potter Trivia (7-8 p.m.) - Test your Happy Potter knowledge in this exclusive trivia contest at the library.  Prizes will be awarded to the smartest Potter fans.

Wednesday, November 17

Lights on Literature Thursday (7:30 p.m.) – Join Todd Schilt for a discussion of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.  Refreshments will be served.

Defensive Driving Courses (6-9 p.m.) - Pick up applications at the information desk during library hours or online at wipublib.org (click on Adult Services). There is a $40 course fee.

Teen Yoga (4:30-5:30 p.m.):  Yoga, which is becoming increasingly popular for teens, is all about balance, strength and harmony. Not only is yoga good for you physically, but it promotes relaxation and an overall sense of well being. Bring a yoga mat or a towel.

Thursday, November 18

Defensive Driving Courses (6-9 p.m.) - Pick up applications at the information desk during library hours or online at wipublib.org (click on Adult Services). There is a $40 course fee.

Yoga For Kids (6-6:45 p.m.)- Join Jackie for a relaxing and fun night of yoga. Bring a yoga mat if you have one. Grades: K- 3.  Limit: 25

Friday, November 19

Pre-School Thanksgiving Craft Workshops (10:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.) - Create a Thanksgiving-themed craft.  Fee: $1.00.  Ages: 3-Pre K.  Limit: 15.

Senior fitness classes- This is a series of gentle exercises with Vicki Luckman geared toward increasing range of motion and flexibility. Bring 1-3 lb. hand weights, a water bottle, and a face towel.  Fee: $15.  Limit: 40.
