Snow Blankets West Islip

Nor'easter brings cold winds, frozen precipitation to hamlet still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

Despite up to four inches of snow blanketing West Islip, students headed off to class Thursday morning and most folks ventured out to work.

With the nor’easter, which the Weather Channel named Winter Storm Athena, bringing strong winds and wet heavy snow to the area, the number of power outages in West Islip grew slightly to 1,366, according to LIPA’s website Thursday morning.

But weather conditions are forecast to greatly improve over the next couple days. According to Weather.com, the forecast for West Islip is for sunny skies Friday through Monday with temperatures rising into the low 60s by the start of next week.
