More than a hundred onlookers gathered on Clarendon Drive in Lake Ronkonkoma on Wednesday to watch Marine Sgt. Ryan Donnelly bury a red, white and blue shovel into the excavated ground at his feet. The ceremony kicked off a construction project that will be the eventual new home for him and his fiancée.

Patchogue

Eloise Staudinger, the founder of  who passed away in 2010, was honored with a cast iron bench dedicated in her memory in front of the store on Main Street recently. Staudinger was described at the ceremony as tenacious in her efforts to beautify Main Street, and was nicknamed "The Flame."

Lindenhurst

The Lindenhurst Village board voted unanimously at its Tuesday   to hire a special traffic consultant and a special architectural consultant in connection with the proposed erection of a CVS Pharmacy at the corner of Montauk Highway and Wellwood Avenue.

Babylon Village

The Suffolk County Police Department arrested a Copiague man on Monday evening for robbing two local banks and attempting to rob two others. Vitaliy Vershov, 27, of Copiague, was arrested outside of his home last evening following an investigation by Suffolk County Police detectives.

West Islip

West Islip High School alumni Pat Cantwell was selected in the third round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft Tuesday. Cantwell, hot off the heels of a victory in the Coral Gables Regional with Stony Brook University's Seawolves, was chosen by the Texas Rangers.

Half Hollow Hills

A Dix Hills teen was drafted to play in the major leagues Wednesday, just weeks before his high school graduation. Charles Galiano, who attends Commack High School, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 36th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, Fordham University Athletics announced.

Deer Park-North Babylon

The construction project at Geiger Park continues and town officials told Patch that work is “moving along nicely.” Sitting on the border of Deer Park and Wyandanch, the park is receiving a major facelift at a total cost of $11 million.
