LIPA Reports 28 Power Outages Following Rain, Winds

Possible tornado and flash floods leave some West Islip residents in the dark.

Heavy rains and winds, which prompted a in Suffolk County, have knocked out power in 28 homes in West Islip as of 3:30 p.m. Friday, according to Long Island Power Authority.

LIPA indicates a crew has been assigned to the outages and estimates that power will be restored by 6 p.m.

Those customers in the dark are located just north of Montauk Highway, near Higbie Lane.

The National Weather Service expired its tornado warning at 2 p.m., but a flash flood warning remains in effect in the area until 4 p.m.

The National Weather Service advise residents not to drive into areas where water covers the roadway and warn that flood water are usually deeper than they appear. One foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep a vehicle off the road, weather officials say.
