Jamaica Fire, Little League Gold Highlight Week in Review

A run through of last week's news

Believe it or not, there was other news besides the LIRR fire last week.  And before everyone begins counting the last days of summer,  we'll first take a look back at what transpired during the week.

Last Sunday, Ryan Harty provided a story of how college friends keep in touch during summers with Saturday softball games.  Also, a feature was written about the Sagtikos Manor Art Show, which was still a success despite the nasty skies.

Monday is when all the fun began.  A switching board fire at Jamaica Station began of fiasco of suspended and canceled trains throughout the whole week.   That wasn't the only bad news of the day either.  With all the heavy rain, the county issued an advisory against swimming in West Islip Beach due to the high levels of bacteria.

On Tuesday, a list of Babylon train suspensions was posted, as well as the weekly police blotter and Earthy Eats column.  This time, it was a recipe for Veggie Taco Casserole

Wednesday, reporter Chris Boyle visited Babylon Station and collected reactions from West Islip residents.   A story was also reported of a WI man who is facing 1-3 years in prison for DWI.

There was finally some good news on Thursday.  The West Islip Little League took home three gold medals in the Williamsport Tournament.  It was also noted that West Islip is now home to the cheapest gas prices on Long Island.  And if you're still searching for a job, Patch posted a list of vacant opportunities in the area.

LIRR service woes continued on Friday.  The history of West Islip column returned with a story of the Yates family, and how they were connected to Hollywood.   Finally, an update of Islip Town's tax audit was also reported by Sayville editor Denise Nash.

Be sure to stay tuned to Patch this week as we'll provide previews of the upcoming high school sports seasons, in addition to back to school stories.
