Fire Island Students Celebrate PARP Throughout March

Bug-themed program combines science and literature.

Students at Woodhull Elementary School are spending the month of March celebrating Parents As Reading Partners (PARP).

This year's PARP theme is "Don't Bug Me, I'm Reading!" To kick off the program, students enjoyed a breakfast of bug-shaped pancakes and wore their pajamas to school.

Throughout the month, students and their families are encouraged to read
together nightly. As readers submit their recorded minutes, their
totals will be tallied and rewarded with prizes and activities.

In total, Woodhull students are aiming to log 13,000 minutes of reading in March.

Guest readers will be visiting the classrooms to share their favorite stories.

The bug-themed program will also incorporate science lessons, and students will conduct hands-on experiments on different living arthropods.

Valerie, I didn't say who called the media. The focus of my comment was that no one, either the BOERead More or the Superintendent's office should be allowed to contribute to negative stories in the media that affect the school district image or its students. These matters are always best handled by attorneys or by persons with public information office experience. The matter should have been treated like any other educated group "NO Comment, Under Review or We are investigating ", we certainty had nothing to gain by Simons negative contribution of the event accept another black eye. Most companies have policies that require prior approval before allowing any employee to dissemination information and especially damaging inquires. The only person who should be allowed to respond to these types of matters is a public information educated person with a board approved message, a lame duck Superintendent is not that person. I hope the BOE takes note and puts measures in place to avoid future incidents of this nature. I am sorry if my reference of Moron offended you, but I call it like I see it, if it walks like a duck and quakes like a duck then it's a duck.

West Islip Resident: Really, your solution to this issue is to fire the administrators for actuallyRead More holding these students accountable for their actions! Did the story belong in Newsday, probably not. But personally, I found it refreshing for the district to actually own up to a problem, rather than sweep it under the rug as many of the other issues are.

I think the mother of the daughter who wrote the "anonymous" letter and then pulled herRead More daughter out of the FB group should be just as accountable. I think the psycho friend of the mother should be accountable too. What do you think about that?

Yes, I was also really disappointed to see the damage to the sign on Lion's Path. Some people haveRead More no respect.

Is it me? Or does anyone else think that all parties involved should be fired for betraying theRead More trust and adding to the tarnished reputation the West Islip School system and its students by reporting the recent cheating scandal to the media. I mean really, did anyone from the district or school system need to contribute to the story in the media, how about no comment the matter is under review. Why does the BOE allow an overpaid moron like Richard Simon with no public information experience to speak to the media let alone anyone? This matter should have been handled by the School Districts attorney. Good job to the Morons of the BOE and Superintendents office keep letting us tax payers down.

You can thank all these POS politicians for the new gun legislation designed to make law abidingRead More citizens give up their second amendment rights out of sheer frustration and incontinence of owning a gun legally for increases in savage on citizen violence. This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
