Blizzard 2013: What You Need to Know

From how to reach the town about snow removal to the latest on store openings, we have you covered.

More than 24 hours after a blizzard dropped nearly two feet of snow on West Islip, many residents are still digging out.

To make it easier, Patch has compiled some of the most important information into one story.

First, local residents needing to call Islip Town should dial 631-224-5600. As of last night, the main roads had been plowed repeatedly, but secondary roads were dicey and were still difficult to navigate.

Also, anyone planning to drive around Long Island on Sunday should take note: many main roads are in bad shape, including the Long Island Expressway, which is shut down from Exit 57 to Exit 73. It won't be easy to drive east. Many cars are still stuck on the LIE.

As for businesses, most retail shops that are scheduled to open on Sunday are, in fact, open. But it's always smart to call ahead. The main supermarkets were open.

And as always: In case of an emergency, dial 911.

Finally, on a lighter side, please continue to share your blizzard photos with us. Residents throughout Long Island have shared great pictures. So join in.

THE TOWN OF ISLIP WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THE STORM. I LIVE IN OAKDALE AND HAVE TO TAKE THE TRAIN TO WORK MONDAY MORNING. THE TOWN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PLOWING OF THE PARKING LOTS AND SIDEWALKS. THEY WERE NOT TOUCHED AS OF 9AM THIS MORNING. MY CAR IS STILL STUCK IN OAKDALE RR PARKING LOT BECAUSE OF THE INCOMPETANT TOWN OFFICIALS WHO ARE NOT ANSWERING THE PHONES. 3 YEARS AGO, AFTER THOSE HORRIFIC BLIZZARDS, NOLANS PEOPLE HAD THE ROADS PARKING LOTS AND THE SIDEWALKS CLEAN THE DAY AFTER THE STORM., EVEN THOUGH THE LIRR DIDNT RESUME SERVICE FOR 4 DAYS LATER. NOLAN'S RESPONSE WAS SPOT ON. THESE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICIALS KNEW HOW TO WIN AN ELECTION, BUT THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN THE TOWN. REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER

Town of Islip Board is missing in action. How long before they start pointing fingers at each other for "incompetenace" and trish continues her power grab against croci. all politics while Islip taxpayers pay the price.

Finally got a plow on my road at 8:00 am this morning. Once again they send a single Ford F-250 to move 2 Feet of snow on a dead end block. The poor driver called for help but he got the same answer we got calling on the phone, unanswered messages. It puzzles me that they don't send the proper equipment time and time again. The main problem is that the cross street is Montauk highway and after they plow Montauk it builds a sold 4-5 foot wall at the end of the block making it impossible for a plow of that size to accomplish anything. In addition, to there being no place to push the snow on the end of the block. I called the 631-224-5600 number several times and spoke to some cordial people but they had no real answers they just keep taking messages.

No indication yet of closings in West Islip. We'll continue to check and keep everyone updated.

I live on Barberry RD! Please don't race down the block! Its icy NO salt on our block! The parents who come down the block HAVE NO CONSIDERATION for the homeowners who live here... Please be careful SAFETY FIRST!

I agree about Barberry rd and the streets are still a mess in West Islip and the side streets if they dont have snow they have ice... its just a mess. If anyone has connections to the West Islip School District to notify how bad it is please let them know. they are always too late

Have driven in Bayshore, Islip, CI, EI--roads horrible. Main roads still dangerous, with one lane clear to blacktop if you are lucky. All other roads barely have one lane plowed, but packed ice/snow everywhere makes it dangerous. Do not know how school busses will get through many streets, and if there is oncoming traffic there is NO place to Pull Over.

exactly barbara we need to contact them somehow i dont feel safe for my childrens riding the bus tomorrow

As for elections, it doesn't matter who we elect they are all FOC from the White House to the outhouse. Once in office they owe so many people favors they can't possibly do the right thing after all the paybacks are made. You either need to vote for someone so rich they can't be bought or someone who is humble enough to accept a nominal salary because they actually want to make a difference. The school boards are just another example, once their kids get what they need they disappear like thieves in the night.

I have to question the people that live on Barberry rd. Did you not know that your block was an access point for a school when you bought it. I mean really, you people complain more about the traffic going in and out of the school gate then a child in a toy store.

Here's a link to file a complaint in the Town of Islip. I strongly suggest that everyone who is not satisfied with the Town's "efforts" let their voices be heard. Bottom line the response is unaceptable...let the Supervisor and Board know your complaints. Share the link with your neighbors and friends in the town http://www.townofislip-ny.gov/index.php?option=com_form&form_id=6
