Suffolk Fencing Academy Advances for Success

Family and friends huddled together as the gleaming red ribbon floated across the crowd. Suffolk Fencing Academy was ready to officially open its doors, preparing young and old for a new experience in Farmingville, New York on November 9, 2013. Anthony Mattera, owner and coach, thanked everyone for their support as the cameras began to flash. Emotions were high as he specifically addressed his grandfather and business partner, Richard Mattera, for playing such an active role in helping to fulfill his dreams of creating Suffolk County's premier center for fencing instruction.

The 3,200 square foot facility was packed after the ribbon cutting ceremony to provide electrical fencing demonstrations. For those who were new to the sport, the instructors provided some background information as fencers engaged for friendly competition. Volunteers from the crowd were selected to try on the gear for the Musketeers program designed for ages 4-6, and Young Squires ages 7-9. The children were delighted to participate and were awarded gifts for helping demonstrate how novices at any age will enjoy the sport.

"This is an exciting time for us to see new business owners who are committed to the physical, social, and emotional well-being of our youth. Fencing teaches discipline, respect, and self-confidence. We are fortunate that the Mattera family will be bringing their expertise and passion to Farmingville," exclaimed Michael Wentz, President of the Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce.

Anthony Mattera has finally seen his dream come true. After starting the Sachem Fencing Club in 2012, Coach Mattera realized his program was growing and he needed to expand. Suffolk Fencing Academy was created after a year of planning, design, and construction.

"I always dreamed of opening my own club where fencers from all levels can meet, learn from each other, and just fence. A program like this never existed when I started fencing in 9th grade. Everyone should always be offered an opportunity to fence in their lifetime," stated Mr. Mattera.
