New Outpatient Cancer Center Coming to Bay Shore

Center should be up and fully operational by March, 2015.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System has received conditional approval from New York State to open a $34 million, 40,000 square-foot outpatient cancer center in Bay Shore.

The new facility, called the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute at Islip, will occupy a former King Kullen supermarket at 440 East Main St.

It will offer comprehensive cancer care, including: diagnostic imaging, radiation medicine, genetic and nutritional counseling, infusion chemotherapy, and medical and surgical oncology disease-oriented specialists. The center will feature a surgical team. Patients will also be able to participate in the broad range of clinical trials offered by the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute.

Construction will start shortly and continue for the next year. The facility will begin serving patients in December 2014, with the entire center expected to open in March 2015. The facility will be staffed by approximately 80 clinical and non-clinical professionals. It will operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“The opening of a Bay Shore facility is part of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute’s continued expansion of outpatient services throughout the metropolitan area,” said Louis Potters, MD, co-executive director of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute, noting the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute’s recent affiliation with North Shore Radiation Therapy, CyberKnife of Long Island in Smithtown and Greenlawn in Suffolk County, Long Island, which also have medical and surgical oncology services.

“For patients and families living near the south shore of western Suffolk County, having convenient access to a full range of cancer services delivered under one roof by the region’s most experienced hematologists, oncologists and surgeons offers a peace of mind that is especially important during an emotionally challenging time,” added George Raptis, MD, vice president of the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute’s oncology network.
