UPDATE: King Kullen Shuttering West Islip Store After Holidays

No date set for closing supermarket doors.

Information regarding land ownership was added to this story.

The West Islip King Kullen on Union Boulevard will close after the holidays but whether a Wild Nature store will replace the retail supermarket is still under review and no official closing date is set.

"There is not a definite date for the closing of the store," stated Lloyd Singer, senior vice president at Epoch 5 Public Relations, in an email to Patch Thursday.

Singer added that King Kullen does not own the store building or the land.

The rumor of the store’s closing has been consistent since early October. At that time King Kullen would not confirm a potential closing. Several Patch readers have stated that the store may be half Wild Nature and half a ‘dollar’ type of store. Another reader said that Good Samaritan may be interested in the location.

Wild by Nature is just one of several independent subsidiaries that the Bethpage supermarket chain operates. It is described as a full-service, full size natural food marketplace on the King Kullen website. There are over 42 King Kullen stores on Long Island.

Longer lines at Stop and Shop. Bring back the old bowling alley, something for kids to do other than bury their heads in iPhones....socialize, talk to people...the good old days

Great location for a Trader Joe's! The South Shore could use one!

Good ideas Eddy and Melissa

Trader Joes! Whole Foods! Uncle Giusseppes! What we don't need is another drug store, or more Good Sam annexes. We need something unique to the area that offers new choices for quality groceries and healthy prepared foods. (I don't know how to spell Gisueppi)

I was the person that told this originally months ago- part two- it will become Wild by Nature

I can't imagine Good Sam is financially stable enough to take over the site

Best Yet should relocate. The larger parking lot and easier access. Also, more checkout lanes.

How about let it be .....nothing we have too many food stores in a small area, maybe we should take on the same thought as the CVS LaGrange blog...... Make it a park. Oh that's right it's not close enough to Montauk highway to matter :)

West Islip could use a Chili's, Applebee's or a similar type of restaurant....
Eddy December 21, 2013 at 12:33 PM
No way !

Sick of Good Sam taking up that shopping center. I grew up in WI. I remember the old King Kullen when it was where Rite Aid is. Many fun times at Captree Bowl. I wish they would keep KK because it is a easy store to navigate and the cashiers are really friendly. Not sure how Wild by Nature would do. Moving Best Yet there is a good idea.
Halford December 27, 2013 at 05:45 PM
gee, it's too late to complain that the KK is closing- "IF" all of the people supported KK as they claim, it wouldn't be closing now would it ?? "I love that King Kullen- I can get in and out so quick" quote from Paula ...that's because no one shopped there much anymore- DUH....Longer lines at Stop and Shop...same thing, too bad you probably didn't shop at King Kullen either... Scheduled to close Jan. 2nd...rumor has it that Wild by Nature will occupy 1/2 and some sort of Dollar store will be in the other 1/2...

The last thing we need is another dollar store! A Wild by Nature or Trader Joe's would be awesome. Since King Kullen didn't own the property, the rent may have gone up prohibitively.

How about a Walgreens??? JUST KIDDING......

Stop and shop is soooo crowded ! The shelves are bare most times I think they need to increase their stock , they weren't quite ready for KK to close. I find myself going to West Babylon for food shopping !
