56th Fighter Group Restaurant to Shut Down

Restaurant opened 28 years ago on airport grounds.

The is closing its doors for good on Aug. 12.

The restaurant, on the grounds of Republic Airport in East Farmingdale, has operated for 28 years. A restaurant employee told Patch on Thursday that the restaurant hadn't been able to reach an agreement on renewing its lease. The restaurant's general manager wasn't available to provide furthe details.

OpenTable.com said of the restaurant, "A visit to the 56th Fighter Group will transport you back to an era of Big Band music and unparalleled patriotism. This charming 1917 French Style Allied Headquarters Farmhouse sits on the site where the P47 fighter aircraft was built during WWII."

Reviews of the restaurant are mostly positive, praising both the American cuisine and its aircraft themes.

The restaurant is part of the Specialty Restaurants Corp., which operates numerous themed restaurants in six states. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Why didn't someone declare it an historical landmark and save the 56th Fighters Group Resturant and all it's property???

Who was the scoundrel that caused this to happen? How dare they demand a leasing agreement that the restaurant couldn't live with? How can we live without the 56th? It's been an institution and place for good food and fun for nearly three decades. This is tragic. I say we form a lynch mob (or at least a lunch mob) and find the culprit and bring him to his senses......at the end of a rope if need be!

It was our fav place to eat and drink. Not expensive and felt like you were sitting and eating at grandmas house. Very warm, hospitable atmosphire. :-(

Truly a very sad loss shows no loyalty to a major landmark shame on Babylon for not trying hard enough to save this great resturant and causing the loss of a great wait staff some of whom will find it very difficult to find work in this econony once again greed shows its ugly head and the working man suffers for it.

Sorry to hear about the closing. Went there for many family occasions. My late mom loved the beer cheese soup. Any time she came up from Florida we had to go there so she could have it. Staff was always great!
