Police: West Islip Sex Offender Must Move Within 45 Days

Douglas Oates must relocate and provide his new address to update state registry.

The Suffolk Police have given notice to a Level 3 sex offender living in West Islip that he must relocate within 45 days.

Police say Douglas Oates, who now lives on Higbie Lane, must notify police of his new address which will then be posted on the state registry service.

According to a state crime database, there are five registered sex offenders residing in West Islip.

Local residents protested about Oates residency as it was across the street from the former Westbrook Elementary School which now houses a dance school and also a learning center for young children.

Yesterday West Islip School Superintendent Dr. Bernadette Burns released a letter to parents on the district’s website regarding a high-risk, Level 3 sex offender living on Higbie Lane and asked parents to talk to students about safety measures and safe behavior.

“While West Islip is a safe community, when information such as this is received, we must take the opportunity to review safety rules with our children and remind them to be alert and careful so they will avoid situations that could place them in harm’s way,” states the letter.

According to a state criminal justice database Oates was convicted for sexual abuse in the first degree in March 1999.

Can someone tell me what 'first degree sexual abuse' is? Is that like, raping someone? (I think that would be sexual assault, right?).

He raped a 9 year old boy... This is his profile on the NY State Sex Offenders Registry page: http://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/SomsSUBDirectory/offenderDetails.jsp?offenderid=7170

I called the town of Islip and put in a complaint to the owner of the residence. Why is there an illegal apartment in the first place????! Doesn't anyone believe in doing a background check on these sick demented animals??? He supposedly said he didn't know about the school? Really? Get out of our community and take the other animals with you.....

How did the landlord allow it and why is no one concerned with the other 4 or 5 sex offenders that have been here for a few years

Someone who has rapped a 9 year old boy should not live anywhere.

I am disgusted about this news, I live 1 block away, I have an 8 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl, my girl goes to the school across the street And the dance school, who in the hell let this happen? Who does the research on where to place these monsters when they are released? They say he has to move within 45 days, but I say take him out now, why wait for something bad to happen? I spoke with News 12 today they are in the neighborhood doing a story on this. But if you want to make a difference contact the office of the Megan's Law,

I called the Town of Islip to have this residence investigated for illegal renting of an apartment or the entire house. There are no permits allowing this to take place. Disguisted really by this....

I'm sick to my stomach what I watched on news12. How dare the homeowner say how this sex offender is a kind and gentle person. She needs to leave this town also!! Typical and disturbing!!!
