Monday, September 20

G.R.A.S.P. Home Study Orientation (5:30-8:30 p.m.) - Western Suffolk B.O.C.E.S. representatives will be on hand to present an orientation for adults (21 years old and up) who wish to enroll in a home study program to prepare for the GED (high school equivalency diploma) exam. Call the Reference Desk for more information.

Knitting Club (7-9 p.m.) - Bring knitting needles, a pattern and yarn and share your knitting knowledge with others. This is an open group. Hazel Grefig will be on hand when possible.

Go Live With Your Local Library at www.live-brary.com (3-9 p.m.) - The West Islip Public Library is opening a digital branch with neighboring Suffolk County public libraries. At www.live-brary.com you'll be able to access a virtual library of free online re- sources including music, videos, audiobooks, and e-book downloads; live K-12 homework help, career guidance, college test prep, and much, much more. Stop by with the family for a Go Live with Your Library celebration to kickoff this exciting service. Contact the Adult Reference Desk for details and a description of activities.

Art Workshop with Laura Goetz (4:30-5:30 p.m.) - Children will paint from an authentic animal skull and real flowers similar to Georgia O'Keefe's style.  Be sure to bring a smock. Fee: $3.00. Grades: K-6.  Limit: 20

Wednesday, September 22

S.A.T. Preparation Workshops (6:30-9:00 p.m.) - Develop skills and strategies to help raise your S.A.T. test scores. This is an indispensable 4-week course and the instructors are NY State certified English and Math teachers. The course fee is $85 and checks or money orders must be made out to Greg Walsh. Sign up now at the Adult Reference Desk.

Tweens Volunteer Craft (4:30-5:30 p.m.) – Need volunteer hours for school? Want to do something nice for the community? Then join Volunteer Craft, which will award a volunteer certificate upon completion.  Limit: 20

Thursday, September 23

Lights on Literature Thursday (7:30 p.m.) – Join Simonne Harkavy for a discussion of The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Alborn.

Pajama Story Times (7-7:45 p.m.) - Stories, songs, craft, movie and a snack! Wear your pajamas if you wish! Ages: 3 years - Pre-K.  Limit: 15 per session

College Essay Writing (7-9 p.m.) - Writing your application essay is one of the most important parts of the college application, and it doesn't have to be painful. Hear author Elizabeth Wissner-Gross, an educational strategist who has helped hundreds of students secure the best opportunities according to their interests, including college admissions, show you how to write your essay. She has appeared on the Today Show and I on New York, has been heard on radio stations throughout the U.S. and has been quoted in The New York Times, Newsday, and USA Today. Students and parents are invited to sign up for this excellent opportunity.

Friday, September 24

Introduction to the Internet (10 a.m.-noon) - Explore the basics of searching the Web. Navigate the library's homepage and basic functions of searching other sites. A working knowledge of using a computer is required. You may be asked to share a computer.  Limit: 12

Haunted House Preparation Meetings (4-5 p.m.) -Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to help create a spook-tacular haunted house for children to explore.  This meeting is where the script will be written, sets built and costumes created - all for the big SCARY performance - which will take place on Saturday, October 23. Community Service credit will be awarded to all participants.
