Where Are West Islip's Most Ignored Stop Signs?

Stop signs are not optional, but they're sometimes treated as if they are.

There are hundreds of stop signs in West Islip, but unfortunately, too often are they completely ignored by folks in a rush.

These "stop-tional" signs are the ones that drivers treat more as a suggestion than a command. The ones in which a car comes down the road, slightly slows down and then accelerates through the stop sign.

Do you know of a location where a stop sign is frequently rolled through or ignored?

Keith Lane or should I say Keith Expressway - the whole length. Stop signs are definitely optional.

Keith lane for sure.

Definately Keith Lane, all along Pat Dr. and corner of Ryan St. and Peter Paul. I watch at least 20 cars a day blow thru that stop sign.

Police used to "hide" on some of those corners- perhaps they should make a return appearance

Higbie Lane from Udall Rd to Sunrise... Cops are always there to boot.

The stop sign at Capri Road and Higbie is more like a Christmas tree at a drag race track. The closer the cars get the faster they go.

People do not even SLOW DOWN on Hunter Avenue at the corner of Harvest. Then they turn into Our Lady of Lourdes. Say a prayer for us locals!

Higbie at Martin Drive seems to be considered an optional stop. Many if not most drivers on Higbie just blow through the stop.

It might be better to name the Stop signs that drivers DO stop at. The only problem is there would be no comments. How about lights? Higbie & Montauk. I've also seen cops who do nothing when a person violates traffic laws. I guess they have to be in the mood.

Do you know how long I have been considering writing a blog about how everyone ignores the street signs around here, not just STOP signs but no parking, no standing, no left turn signs!!! It drives me crazy!!! Keith Lane is horrible but I live on Milligan and my street as well as the other parallel streets have the same issue! At the end of Milligan when you are facing the hospital there is a no left turn sign everyone ignores as well as left turn into Milligan from Montauk Hwy!! The one that is the worst to me is the exit from Stop and Shop on the western most side where there is actually an island that makes you FACE the right as well as a sign saying no left turn and people still turn there!! Wow I could probably write about this everyday! My kids will tell you how frustrated I get everyday on these roads!! I could do this all day! ;)

The four stop signs at the corner of Leopold Ave & Rockaway St are always ignored. Some day there is going to be quite an accident there.

I am the same. It drives me crazy. I had written to Steve Levy years ago and he had forwarded it to the 3rd precinct and they sent someone out but it didn't last long. I have seen people make that left at Milligan and Montauk also in plain view of a squad car. Also, people make the left into St. Johns where they are not supposed to. Yesterday around 515pm I was at the end of 231 waiting for the light to turn on to Montauk east bound when a silver SUV goes on the right where the ambulances sometimes come through and just cuts about 10 cars off like he was the only one on the road! These drivers will continue to do this until they get a ticket. You can all the laws in the world but if they're not being enforced what good is it. People think they're for everyone else but not themselves.

Gayle- Write the blog! I'm sure it would create a stir in the community, many residents seem to share your frustration.

The corner of Parkwood Road and Essex has a stop sign, I think because Essex there is only a road on one side of Parkwood here people get a false sense of complacency. There are many young kids on this block, there is no reason in the world why people should not stop here. I would say 25-30% stop.......40-50% roll through (at varying speeds) and 10-20% either slow down but do not come close to stopping or just blow right through. Not cool, folks.

I feel the same way Gayle!! People think the laws do not apply to them, and they are special. Stop and Shop is rediculous...I see it everyday....I live off of Udall over by Roderick, do you know how many times I can't make a left onto Roderick, because the light is red, and people block that road, even though there is a sign that says do not block side street....duh! The stop sign on Hunter and Harvest is optional....I almost got hit there, and the stupid girl on her cell phone gave me the finger....ughhh, I can go on and on and on! We should get together and start a blog, and get people's license plate numbers and put them on there for public knowledge lol!

Center Bay @ Bay 2nd. Also getting on to Montauk from East Bay is crazy. There is a sign that says it's a violation of NYS law to block sideroads but they do anyway. Also at that corner, you are not supposed to make a left from 3pm - 7pm but I see people doing it all the time. And what a people that use the center turning lanes to travel to avoid traffic for blocks before they actually turn.
