West Islip Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday

Woman boasts the rare achievement of having had ten decades of birthdays.

Josephine Eich-Katzmarski, a resident at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in West Islip, celebrated her 100th birthday and did it in style complete with a tiara for the festivities this summer.

A long-distance switchboard operator for the New York Telephone Company and later at Elmhurst-Mt. Sinai Hospital where she retired after 25 years, Josephine and her husband Frederick were married for 57 years, until his passing, and raised two children, Judith and the late Frederick Jr.  Josephine later remarried Michael Katmarski, Sr., of Plainview. 

Today Josephine is blessed with six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.Josephine became a resident of Our Lady of Consolation in December 2010.

She stays active by being a lector at Mass and participating in recreational activities.  She is an avid reader and participates in a long distance learning relationship with her daughter’s Bible study each week.
