Unplowed, Hard-to-Pass Roads? Tell Us

Let us know in the comments where you are seeing unplowed roads.

A one-two punch of snow and ice this week has kept highway crews busy clearing roads so people can get out to go to work, or just pick up a meal downtown.

However, we're hearing from a few people who say side streets are still covered in snow and ice.

Let us know in the comments where you are seeing unplowed roads.

Have lived in Town of Huntington for over 20 years, and the roads have been the worst I have seen them with less than 12 inches of snow. Monday morning just after 8:30 am Woodbury road was a mess and looked like no truck had even been down it once which is surprising because it is a main route for people to get to the train station. Town was not much better at that hour. Woodlee, Saw Mill, Peabody, Lawrence Hill were all bad. Truck did a portion of Lawrence Hill and piled the snow up against Peabody which is a dangerous intersection; cars frequently skid out into Lawrence Hill from Peabody because of slick roadway at the mouth of Peabody. After each storm this year Saw Mill and Woodlee tricky to navigate. Have never seen either street look like this the day after the storm. After the earlier storm, trucks quickly showed the day it got warm to get the snow off of Saw Mill and Woodlee before the temps dropped that night. I know we have a new superintendent, but don't the same guys work in the department and aren't they familiar with how the roads have been cleaned?

Franklin Avenue in Deer Park. 5-6 inches of pure slush.

Pat...lived in Huntington during the 60's-70's-80's, and experienced much of what you are referring to. In fact now here in Seaford/ (TOH) its the same situation. The issue is and always will be that the Town Plow Operators get paid by the hour and not by the section of road...if we changed the compensation program to be paid on a street by street basis and done correctly, or better yet pay them by the mile. Then we might see an improved operations. Keep fingers crossed that the big storm coming Sunday/Monday will blow out to sea. Or no one will be getting around for a while.

St James, good as always. Not sure why Smithtown can get the job done just about every time and no one else can..... but I'm glad I live where I do.

what about east hampton
Ingris February 05, 2014 at 04:47 PM
Grand pl off east 11th st. Every time it snows our street never gets plowed. I'm sick and tired of calling the town. Is it because it's a dead end st??
G February 05, 2014 at 05:37 PM
Most of the side streets in Huntington (north of Main St) were not plowed until after 9 am it seems. There is talk that many LI towns are running out of salt, but Huntington wasn't mentioned in particular. We saw the same lousy response after Monday's storm as well, side streets not plowed until well past morning commute.

Streets in Hampton Bays not passable. South Valley Road and Canoe Place Road. The town of Southampton is not doing a good clearing the streets. We are stranded in our home unable to get to work. With a state of emergency, all roads should be plowed.

WE GOT SCREWED ! Dan Losquadro has been operating since OCT 2013, a total of $720,000 dollars SHORT, OF HIS DEPT'S 2014 CAPITAL BUDGET....WHY ?...BECAUSE he turned that amount over to put up 'lights' in downtown Rocky Point ! Go to Ken Lavalle's press office page, to see the press release......http://www.nysenate.gov/press-release/senator-lavalle-secures-500000-rocky-point-downtown-revitalization-project

He is hiding in the BROOKHAVEN HWY Dept. as a "Highway General Supervisor" ....http://www.scribd.com/doc/175530291/Michael-Murphy-LinkedIn-top-highway-general-supervisor

88th Street just east of Columbus Ave. Is there a dislike for the upper West Side?
brookhavenconfucius February 06, 2014 at 07:35 AM
The other day, frozen chunks of ice was making Echo Avenue from Adams in Sound Beach, all the way PAST, the Miller Place Post Office, virtually impassable to drive...NO SALT !

Not impressed with the new guy, Gunther, in Huntington. This was the worst plowing in the 25 years I've lived in East Northport.
Six Pack February 06, 2014 at 08:28 AM
I could not be happier with the guy who does the area between oakwood and cold spring hills road. From Jericho turnpike north to west 22nd street in huntington. He never stops. He must have done my specific block 6 times over 6 hours. The streets look great. Thanks!

brookhavenconfucius, Bonner and Losquadro are too close to each other to effectively make sure they are doing the "right thing" by the majority of people. Bonner has poured a lot of unnecessary, and what turned out to be useless money many times into a very small area under her district instead of helping out the larger portion of her district. I'm not surprised to hear from you that funds were shuffled to her pet project area - rocky point.
brookhavenconfucius February 06, 2014 at 08:56 AM
Frank, this one was IN PLAIN SIGHT, on OLD FART Lavalle's web assembly page ! Pouring money into that "HOLE", that Rocky Point is, doesn't even SHOW to the naked eye...WHO ARE THEY FOOLING... unless you are looking at the broken TILDA CLOCK, right across from OXYGEN !

South Setauket good on main roads in my development. The snow removal much better this year than last! Only complaint is that every time we shovel out the driveway, the trucks come back. When we could see total blacktop on the road, we didn't need any more plowing. However, the plow kept coming back piling up more from the sides of road (just going closer to the curbs) onto our driveway entrance. Snow removal guys you are doing a great job, but please don't overdo. We have to pay someone to shovel our driveway and this Winter, we are going broke. Please try to leave driveways open if you (after three plowings) can. It would be appreciated. Thanks for all the good work you do.

If you live on a dead end in Valley Stream, just give up. Called the town twice to complain that Broadway hadn't been treated -- first call got an attitude, the patently false "we plow every street" and an assurance someone would be down our block. The second call got -- kid you not -- a bulldozer to shove some slush around. Didn't clear the street, no sand, no salt.

I am so proud , AGAIN, to praise the town of Smithtown Highway dept(did that after hurricane Sandy) I always tell people how great this dept is. I, as a newspaper delivery person , NEVER, have an issue getting my job done(perhaps the only issue is trying to stay out of their way) and that in part is because of the absolutely great job they do. Yes, you pay for it, but you actually do get it. Try driving on Old Willets Path - cross over 347 and you will IMMEDIATELY notice the different in road conditions. My customers are happy because you make it possible for them to get their paper. Perhaps these commenters should relocate

Frank the linchpin between the two, is Steven Losquadro. He is Bonner's Consigliare, along with Dicky Johannessen...otherwise known as "County Employee C", from Spota's report on the County Ethics Panel. Stevie of course, got caught in 2005, by Alan Hevisi, of ALL people, with taking State money for work NOT performed, for ""The Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund paid Steven LosQuadro, of Long Island, $15,000 a year to serve as a part-time lawyer." from 1999 to 2005. The attorney, according to the audit, provides legal advice to the authority as needed and does not submit time sheets or work at the fund’s offices. LosQuadro, who since 1999 has donated $1,650 to Gov. Pataki, declined comment. Fund spokeswoman Stacy Clifford said the board of directors is looking into the issue." http://nypost.com/2005/02/16/hevesi-audit-slams-gop-part-timer/

East End gets the job done. After Super Storm Sandy, the roads were repaired quickly and done well. My trips to Democrat Point showed me the work was organized and complete. Snow plowing by the Highway guys is going just as well.
