A list of activities offered between August 2-7

Are your summer ideas dwindling? Is the heat starting to make your head spin?  Well don't worry, because West Islip Patch has your back.  The local library is offering daily activities, clubs and programs, all of which take place in a cool air-conditioned atmosphere.  Here's what's on the agenda for this week.

Monday, August 2

Family Movie Night (6:30- 8:30 p.m.) – This week's film is Finding Nemo.  Open to all ages.  Cost: $1.00.

Tuesday, August 3

"Stepping On" Falls Prevention for Seniors (10 a.m.- noon)- Sponsored by the Suffolk County Health Department, this 7-week workshop is led by a health professionals and local guest experts who will be providing information on exercise, vision, safety and medications. Areas of discussion include balance and strength training, ways to stay safe while out and about, how to buy safe footwear and how to check your home for safety. Become more aware of hazards and learn how your fall risk can be reduced. Limit is 14.

Small Talk (3:30- 4:15 p.m.)- For kids grades 1-3.  Join the library for a fun read-aloud and craft.  Your book buddies will be waiting to hear all about it. Cost: $1.00.  Limit:  20. 

Wednesday, August 4

Blood Pressure Screening (2- 3 p.m.) - This community service is brought to you by the auspices of Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter's office and the Consolation Residence nursing staff.

Teens & Tweens Night Out: Rubber Ducky Time (7- 8 p.m.)- You will design your very own unique rubber ducky and then race them against others. Cost: $3.00.  Limit: 25.

Thursday, August 5

History of the Long Island Rail Road (7-9 p.m.) - David Morrison, author of "Long Island Rail Road Stations" and retired LIRR branch line manager, will give a presentation on the history of the railroad. This program coincides with the 100th anniversary of Pennsylvania Station. 

4th Annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Show (10:45- 11:30 a.m.) - Sponsored by the WIIT (WI Involved Teens) Council, kids (grades 1-6) will have the opportunity to show off their artistic abilities by using multi-colored chalk and decorating the sidewalks. Win prizes and let the public see your work. Limit: 15.

Friday, August 6

Read-to-Me Fridays (10:30-11:15 a.m.) - Teen Volunteers Needed.  Are you entering grades 7-12 and need community service? Join us on Friday mornings for a special program where you will read and share stories with younger children. A wonderful experience and a great way to earn volunteer credit!  Friday Afternoon at the Movies (Starting at 1 p.m.)- For a list of upcoming films, please visit the Library Blog

 Seniors Fitness Classes (11 a.m.-12 p.m.)- This is a series of gentle exercises with Vicki Luckman geared toward increasing range of motion and flexibility. Bring 1-3 lb. hand weights, a water bottle, and a face towel.  Fee: $15.  Limit: 40.
