7 Things People Want to See Happen in West Islip

An informal poll reveals a wide-ranging wish list.

Just like any other south shore community in Islip, some West Islilp residents are truly hoping that a Trader Joe’s will come to town in 2014.

But that isn’t the only wish list item locals have when it comes to wanted improvements and changes in West Islip.

At least according to an informal Patch Facebook poll that asked readers what changes and improvements they would like to see in West Islip.

Salvatore Nunzio wants less graffiti.

Luanne Carbonetti, Robin Bavaro and Porsia Carlotta Yonkasky are hoping that West Islip will be transformed into having a Babylon Village-Like business section.

“It could be done on Union. Parking is already available. All we would need to start is a coffee shop a lunch spot (sandwich/panini - not pizza) and a cute gift store. I would also like to thank the owners of the strop mall where 7-11 is. They did a beautiful face lift instead of running it to the ground and building a new one,” Yonkasky wrote in response to Patch’s informal Facebook page.

Bavaro noted she is not in favor of any Dollar Store coming into empty storefronts, such as the recently closed King Kullen. Jen De Matteo would love to see a Wild By Nature or Trader Joe’s at that specific location, and Montemurro-Clegg would also love a Trader Joe’s.

Lower taxes is tops on Thomas Panico’s list and a Starbucks is the big change wanted by Desiree Montemurro-Clegg.

Rick DeClue would like to see an additional railroad crossing besides the Higbie Lane option.

Well, one thing WI does not need is more Good Sam offices. Especially not in the Captree Shopping Center. Wishful thinking would hope for a movie theatre, bowling alley, someplace fun for kids to go to. Nice lunchonette would be great. We already have a dollar store, which is a good store, so we don't need a Dollar Tree. Never liked Starbucks, too much money for a crappy cup of coffee. People complained about King Kullen being expensive soI can't imagine them liking Trader Joes, Whole Foods or Wild byNature. All 3 are expensive. I do love the new storefronts at 7-11 shopping plaza. Lower taxes would be great but is not ever going to happen. I really do miss King Kullen. Easy in and out at that store.

Bowling alley. Def not a Babylon village. West ISLIP is a hamlet not a village. It is not supposed to have a main st. That's why it's called Montauk hwy. one thing west ISLIP needs desperately is less traffic not more which is what would be created by adding more businesses.

Less visible garbage around town would be nice.

We do NOT need a bowling alley- they are a dying breed- there is Babylon Bowl and Bay Shore bowl, which are not that far away- Trader Joes would be great as well as Uncle Giuseppe...

The king kullen location is too big for a trader Joes. It would have to logically be something like a whole foods or wild by nature. I guess we'll see. I also love the update of the 7-11 shopping strip

I'm on board with having another RR crossing to alleviate massive traffic issues on Higbie Lane, especially on the weekend. How do you get that ball rolling? Lor

Want a silly village, move to Babylon, or better still Queens, or better still Manhattan. Expect prices to go up, more traffic, pollution, accidents. All the good stuff of civilization! Developers are just greedy termites, they seldom live where they destroy neighborhoods. Wait til CVS ruins the LaGrange...
