'Thank God For Kind Loving Neighbors': How Locals Coped With Sandy Power Outages

Share your own Sandy story on our open blog.

More than 80 percent of LIPA customers lost power in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and many remained in the dark for several days, with a few waiting well more than a week for power to be restored.

On the one year anniversary of Sandy, we asked readers on our Facebook page how long they were without power and how they coped. Here's a few of the responses:

Maureen Cahill Armata: 13 days....6 at home in the freezing cold, 6 at a friends house in West Islip, with heat, hot water and a warm bed, one more day at home before we got a generator to power the entire beach community that I live in.

Madeline Ferro: 7 days thank God for kind & Loving Neighbors ...

Glenn Denzler: ...about 10 hrs...made a lot of friends for two weeks.

Kelly Schember Walsh: 8 days we boiled water on the gas stove to warm up the house, got the power back right before the snow storm
