Petition Started to Build Traffic Light on Montauk Highway

Light would be constructed along Montauk Highway (between Higbie and Willets) to improve child safety.

In light of the , a petition directed to the Town of Islip and West Islip School District was started on Change.org to have a traffic light installed along Montauk Highway between Higbie Lane and Willets Lane.

The petition, which was created by Scott Wiatrak, has already drawn 293 signatures.  Wiatrak states his main purpose for the light is to "improve the safety of children south of Montauk getting to and from high school."  Here is a copy of the body of his letter:

"Along Montauk Highway between Higbie and Willets, traffic moves too fast at all hours of the day most importantly when our children need to cross to go to and from the high school. There are no traffic lights or even simple pedestrian cones/signs during morning and afternoon student crossings similar to Babylon Village to alert speeding traffic that there is an active crosswalk for school children. Too many of our kids have been struck and injured in the last 3 years. We bus the elementary and middle school children, why not the high school kids as well?"
