Sick Whale Put Down Near Gilgo Beach
An ailing pygmy sperm whale that beached itself along the shoreline just east of Gilgo Beach was euthanized on Tuesday by a marine life organization.

According to Newsday [paid subscription], the sick whale was seen on the beach by a bystander around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

As a flight instructor at Long Island MacArthur Airport, Mike Nelson often brings his students flying around the New York City skyline.

On Monday afternoon, though, it was his girlfriend Jessica Rispoli in the passenger's seat for a flight down the Hudson River. When the plane landed at MacArthur about an hour later, Rispoli was his fiancée.

Lindy Teen, Suffolk Police Help Rescue Stranded Kayakers

A Lindenhurst teen is being hailed for hearing a call for help on Monday evening that resulted in the rescue of two kayakers from the Great South Bay.

Gem Hattat, a 19-year-old Lindenhurst resident, said he heard what sounded like a person or persons calling for help, but could not see anybody in the waters to the south of his location at the Lindenhurst Village Marina, the United States Coast Guard said.
