New Airline to Take Flight at MacArthur

Allegiant Air offering a $99 roundtrip introductory fare to Fort Myers.

Allegiant Travel Company is set to fly from Long Island MacArthur Airport to Florida and will offer a $99 roundtrip introductory fare when it takes off in December.

Allegiant is the second airline this year to jump onboard at MacArthur this year. PenAir recently began offering flights to Boston from the Islip airport.

Allegiant plans to operate two nonstop flights a week – Mondays and Fridays – at 6:15 p.m., on aircraft that will carry up to 166 passengers and will offer an initial fare of $99 roundtrip--or $69 one way from MacArthur to Punta Gorda Airport in Fort Myers.

“MacArthur Airport is an extremely important resource for Islip Town, and the entire Long Island region,” Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt said.  “The Town Board appreciates the airport’s economic significance, realizing that it generates hundreds of thousands of dollars on an annual basis, while providing thousands of jobs both at and beyond the airport.  We are committed to doing what is necessary to reverse its recent downward trend.”

Allegiant, based in Las Vegas, will start flying from MacArthur on Dec. 20.
