Meeting About Vacant Getty Gas Station Set For Thursday

Residents invited to gather at the corner of Udall Rd. and Muncey Rd. at 7 p.m.

A community meeting to discuss the future of the vacant Getty station on the north side of West Islip is scheduled for Thursday night.

According to signs on the property located at the corner of Udall Rd. and Muncey Rd., the meeting is set for 7 p.m. While no location is indicated on the signs, information posted on the West Islip Neighborhood Facebook page indicated the meeting would be held on the property.

It is unclear who or what group is behind organizing the meeting.

In 2009, a proposal to raze the gas station and construct a 7-Eleven on the property was met with strong opposition from residents in the area. At an Islip Town Planning Board hearing two years ago, West Islip residents packed the meeting to express their opinions, with an overwhelming majority against the convenience store.

Since that meeting, the property has remained vacant. The gas pumps and tanks have been removed, but the structure on site is covered with plywood.
