Helping Hands in West Islip Hosts Holiday Toy Drive Wednesday

Residents can donate new or like-new toys at the American Legion Post on Union Blvd.

Helping Hands in West Islip, Inc. is holding their annual Holiday Toy Drive on Wednesday to collect toys for local children in need.

The organization, which recently distributed blankets and clothing to victims of Hurricane Sandy, will accept new and like-new toys and gifts for children and young teens at the American Legion Post 1738 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In addition to donating, community members are invited to help wrap the gifts. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own scissors and tape to help out. Students and scouts who donate their time will earn community service credit.

More than 5,000 gifts were collected and distributed during last year's drive, though organizers say Sandy has created an even bigger need this year, as families have been displaced or have lost most of their belongings in the storm.

Those looking to donate are asked to attach a small note or piece of candy to their gift, and label items with the suggested gender and age of the recipient.

I think Proposition 2 is a great idea, in the current structure you have to "call out" anRead More individual basically saying "I think you are doing a particularly bad job". Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.
