Get Out: Guide For The Weekend

This week we included an annual Mother's Day plant sale and the Elizabeth McNamee 5k Run.

Having trouble planning your weekend?  Hopefully these ideas are just what you're looking for.  If you have any further suggestions, please drop 'em in the comment section below.

1.  WI-Beautification Society's Mother's Day Plant Sale

When/Where:  939 Montauk Highway, West Islip (Saturday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.)

Why Go:  This Mother's Day, come to the West Islip Beautification Society's Annual Mother's Day Plant Sale.  Featured at the sale will be annuals, perennials, hanging baskets and vegetables. Browse at your own time and convenience.  All proceeds will go towards helping beautify West Islip. Check their website for more details.

2Elizabeth McNamee Memorial 5k Run

When/Where: West Islip High School (5k starts at 9:30 a.m., but everyone must be registered by 9 a.m.)

Why Go: Support the Elizabeth McNamee Foundation by competing in this annual race.  Prizes will be given out for the top-3 in various age groups and there will also be t-shirts distributed to participants.

Pricing: $25 for 5k, $15 for 1-mile. 

3.  Earth Day 2011 At Town Hall Pond

When/Where:  200 E Sunrise Hwy, Lindenhurst (Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.)

 Why Go:  Celebrate Earth Day at Town Hall Pond in Lindenhurst.  Sponsored by over 20 companies specializing in energy efficiency, it is sure to be a terrific opportunity to spread awareness and enjoy the planet we live on.  The Department of Environmental Control will showcase their programs to help the environment. There will also be giveaways such as PET recycled grocery bags, coffee mugs, pooper scoopers; clean energy displays, recycling information, an inflatable bouncing tent for the kids, environmental information regarding the Town’s storm water programs and other environmental initiatives.

4.  Babyln Village Arts Council Poetry-Writing Workshop

When/Where:  , 24 S Carll Ave, Babylon (Saturday, 2-4 p.m.)

 Why Go:  If you have any kind of interest in poetry or writing, this is a great opportunity to discover new poetry and explore different writing styles.

Pricing:  Free

5.  NYSSMA Solo/Ensemble Festival 

When/Where:  85 Wheeler Rd, Central Islip (Sunday, 7-8 p.m.)

 Why Go:  NYSSMA is a wonderful organization that is full of musical talent for todays youth.  For a night of professional sounding music and great entertainment, come to the NYSSMA Solo/Ensemble Festival.
