Do You Know Whose House This Was?

This historical home near West Islip is now gone.

Built in around 1870, this majestic home once belonged to a shipping magnate and according to a report on a New York City website, "was one of the few prospectors who succeeded in building a fortune during the California Gold Rush of 1849." Unsurprisingly, the man not only had his mansion out on Long Island but "built brownstones between 57th and 58th Streets (in Manhattan) in hopes of re-establishing a residential community."

Don't go looking for the home for clues though. In his book "Long Island Historic Houses of the South Shore" author Christopher Collora's says that the house was sold in 1903 and then demolished.

Do you know the name of the person who owned this home and any of its history? Put your best guess in the comments below. Come back to the site on Friday for the answers.
