About: It’s May 17 and Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer is on the horizon. Families across West Islip will be marking the holiday by spending time with family, having barbecues and enjoying what many hope will be the start of a sunny and warm summer across the hamlet.

For those looking for the proper fixins for their first big barbecue of the Summer of 2011, they can save gas and time by shopping at local merchants. Hometown Heroes and are good choices for six-foot heroes and cold salads. Burgers, hot dogs or perhaps some juicy steaks can be found at local supermarkets (they sell beer too!). And for those seeking a higher-end adult beverage, or are among those merchants that have a wide selection from which to choose.

Finally, no Memorial Day weekend in West Islip would be complete without the annual parade that marches down Udall Road and Higbie Lane on Monday, May 30. Be sure to come out and thank a local veteran for his/her service to the United States.
