Bellone to Host World Water Day Celebration

WHAT:  Saturday, March 22 is World Water Day and Suffolk County is joining communities and organizations around the world hosting events to focus on the critical importance of protecting and conserving water.  To mark World Water Day, Suffolk County is partnering with the Girl Scouts for a celebration that will give Girl Scouts a chance to earn a Love Green patch by helping clean up the beach, test water quality and listening to a presentation by County Executive Steve Bellone, Stony Brook scientist Chris Gobler and the Suffolk County Department of Health. Bellone has identified water quality as the one of the most important issues facing the county, stating, “Nitrogen poisoning of our surface and groundwater’s is the greatest crisis this county has faced in generations. The water that feeds our wetlands and marshlands protect us from storms like Superstorm Sandy. The advance levels of nitrogen pollution being inflicted on Suffolk County’s ground and surface waters threatens the future of Suffolk County.”
