Our mild winter so far, the best supermarkets on the island, online poker and the most popular dog names of 2011 were the topics of discussion this week.
Here's the scoop on what readers were debating on Patch this week. You can click the links to the particular Sound Off to leave a comment on a topic. Long Island got smacked with a snowstorm on Halloween and there have been a couple of really cold days so far this winter, but so far the winter of 2011-12 has been mild. We asked readers what their favorite kind of winter is. By a solid margin, readers said "I am perfectly happy with the way it has been going so far." Reader comment: "I love snow. We need snow a few times a month maybe just a dusting and one or two big storms. I do not feel like Christmas happened yet as I …

The Billy Joel tribute band draws big crowd and fund raises for new scoreboard in the high school gym.
One of Long Island's more popular tribute bands, Big Shot, performed at West Islip High School on Saturday evening to help raise money for a new wireless scoreboard in the school's gymnasium. The show was put on by Chris Hillier, president of the West Islip Hoops Club, and Bob Christiansen, who's on the board of directors for the WI Breast Cancer Coalition, in an effort to generate enough dollars to support several athletic booster clubs. "This is the first time we're having Big Shot play at our school, so we are extremely excited to have them here,” Hillier said. Many West Islip residents, school officials and town officials came out to support the student-athletes and rock out to great music. Hillier said 477 tickets were sold and …

Contractual dispute between studio, actors puts long running animated show in jeopardy.
Is the end near for Bart, Lisa, Homer, Marge and Maggie? According to a report by the Daily Beast, FOX’s long running animated series The Simpsons is in danger of coming to an end because of a contractual dispute with the actors that voice the show’s popular characters. A statement from 20th Century Fox TV said the company cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model. The Daily Beast reported that the studio is threatening to end production unless the actors take a 45 percent pay cut. The talent has countered with a proposed 30 percent cut in pay, but with a small slice of the show’s back-end earnings that include money from syndication. Click here to read the full story.

The West Islip Chamber of Commerce attended the 36th Annual West Islip Country Fair this past weekend brought to our community by the West Islip BiCentennial Committee. This annual event that takes place on the West Islip library grounds is a tradition that we all look forward to at this time of year. With more than 300 vendors our residents and vistors enjoy the luxury of finding treasures that go beyond our normal shopping experience. RELATED: View photos of the fair The entertainment was fabulous and we even purchased a CD from one of the groups performing. This full day event brings us a great shopping, eating, dancing (yes, I said dancing) experience unlike no other. Our hats go off to this dedicated group of residents who make …

Babylon resident Derrick Prince, star of Fox's hit reality show MasterChef, walks A.J. and Chris through this cool summer dish.
Instead of stopping at local restaurants to see how the best food is prepared, we at Patch decided to get demonstrations by local residents right in their own kitchens to see what they cook to perfection. "What's For Dinner?" returns with its third installment: Asian salad. We recently visited with Derrick Prince, who's a contestant on the Fox reality series "MasterChef," with Gordon Ramsay. (You can watch his show on Fox 5 Monday and Tuesday nights at 9 p.m.) Among Prince's many specialties is an Asian salad made with kale and mustard greens instead of the ordinary iceberg or romaine. A super healthy summer dish that you can prepare in less than 20 minutes. You can view the recipe on his website. Also, follow him on twitter. RELATED…
