West Islip 2012-13 School Budget Guide

Proposed spending plan and Board of Education elections go before voters Tuesday.

West Islip school district taxpayers will cast their vote on the district's on Tuesday. 

The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. at .

The proposed $110,880,192 budget represents a 3.49 percent budget-to-budget increase, or approximate spending increase of $3,736,422. If voters pass the budget as is, it would represent a 2.27 percent tax levy increase.

The Budget

Initially predicting a $6 million buget shortfall, the Board of Education decided to , which is expected to save the district upwards of $3 million.  

Board of education President Steve Gellar said the decision process to close the schools was "long and arduous" but "necessary", however many community members have .

The closures resulted in the elimination of 38 positions (down from a ) and the reduction of some elementary-level clubs at a savings of roughly $2.4 million.

Eliminated positions include:

  • 15 teachers
  • 2 principals
  • 2 clerical workers
  • 5 custodians
  • 10 paraprofessionals
  • 4 teaching assistants

The budget was by the retirement of six teachers and four administrators, saving an additional $700,000.

In March, a busing referendum that would have for high school and middle school students.
