After a two-year sales slump, revenues at Walmart have been on the rise for the past three months, according to an AP report.
There are currently 12 Walmart stores on Long Island, with seven of those in Suffolk County. Plans to build an eighth location in East Patchogue have stirred up controversy in that area.
Does the news of Walmart's increasing revenues reflect the nation's stagnant economy as shoppers hunt for bargain prices? Is Walmart a net positive or negative for Long Island's business landscape?

I will not shop at a Wall Mart. The majority of language spoken at the stores is Spanish and I do not understand Spanish. If the corportation catered more to English speaking patrons, I might reconsider. .

Matt - have you shopped at E. Patchogue CVS lately? That's all I am going to say.
If Walmart comes here, I will shop there; but hopefully it will be a mixed crowd of customers...There are not many stores to shop at in this area besides the Fashion Bug/Dress Barn for clothes, Blum's mostly bathing suits and very casual wear. Burlington Coat Factory - but the dressing room is disgusting!

In an attempt to save money I do shop there from time to time, Target can be overpriced and the shipping is costly. Walmart has very low shipping if any, the clothes do wash well. At the end of the day with a family of 5 I try to save where I can.

I do not like Wal-Mart. Like someone before me said, it has a high volume of Spanish speaking individuals. I went to the Wal-Mart in Islandia and almost slipped into a panic attack as I felt like I was in a foreign land. All I heard was Spanish all around me. I was so uncomfortable and couldn't wait to get the heck out. I went there because it is cleaner than the Wal-Mart in Centereach. I will not lie and say "I never" go to Wal-Mart. I do venture there a couple of times a year when I am looking for a particular item. I have no idea why there are so many Spanish speaking individuals gravitating to one store. I have had good experiences with Wal-Mart for on-line purchases.

Are you talking about the patrons of the store??What world do you live in. A highly racist one. Are you kidding me. How dare you condemn a group of people based on the language they speak. Get real, I'm happy to say that the smart young people of today learn the language and have acceptance. Where do you live, a cave???

Elizabeth. I don't feel I am racist at all. I live in the United States of America. I welcome anyone into this country regardless of their race or religion. I feel very strongly that people should learn to speak the language of the country they reside in. Why should we as Americans have to learn another language in order to communicate with people that we have welcomed into our borders. I don't live in a cave, I am not racist. It's just that I don't feel comfortable going into a store where all I hear is chattering that I don't understand.

I always go to Walmart especially the one in Vets Highway. Spanish people are all over and look at Bayshore Mall. Look at JC Penny for instance.. There are always hispanic people there. When it comes to savings I always shop where there are savings. Let them build in Patchogue. It will create jobs and thats what we need to get the people who does not have jobs and keeps them out of trouble and don't let them live in the street. We should be able to shop wherever and whenever. I totaly ignore them. If it bothers you and they speak Spanish say something. Say we are Americans...speak American not Spanish. I am not afraid on telling them. I say it. We always hear the recording... If you speak Spanish press one. This is part of life people... Unfortunately we can't help it. WE NEED TO CREATE JOBS... We are in a crises..

Don't shop at any Walmarts. The multi-billionaires that own Walmart supply mostly chinese products that destroy our US manufacturing and good paying jobs and they pay their workers minimum wage and restrict their hours to part time so they don't have to give them healthcare nor any benefits. All the other stores carry US made products and pay better wages to their employees and give them healthcare and benefits and allow them to join a union. If the word union is even mentioned at Walmart they are immediately terminated. It is like a little bit of Nazism right in our own backyard.

I am shocked and ashamed at how racist many of you are...do you live in Lindenhurst? What does it matter what language people shopping speak? I go to stores and hear cell phone conversations, people screaming at their unruly children and cursing. I would rather hear Spanish than uppity English speakers any day.

You are right Jean. My family lives in Italy and they are dying to speak English and they went to school for it. just wish the Spanish people learn how to speak English. The United States are giving to much freedom to give the Spanish people not to speak English. Most of the jobs out there are required to speak Spanish and that isn't fare. We are American and English should be important. The people in a different country should learn how to speak English if they come to America!!!!! Thats my belief!!!!!

Yes, Lina.... I totally agree with all your comments here. This is America, speak the language! America has allowed these illegals to come here, work here without paying taxes, plus get on the Social Services system, no questions asked. I have my prejudices about them because when it is time for me or one of my family members to get assistance, it is almost impossible! We've been working here our entire lives and have contributed to society, have they? Plus they create "anchor babies" - but that is another subject. Back to Walmart. Everytime I shop anywhere I really do not look to see where the item I am purchasing was made in China, Japan, or wherever. A Walmart here would be right in my back door, convenient yes, but the traffic will be an issue for sure. Plus the noise from the store, the trucks, etc. We'll see what happens, that's all. Let's not forget the Hospital Road bridge that is already crowded and much too small with only one lane going north and south.

I totally agree. America is made up of Immigrants and I am not racist as someone suggested earlier. I think the problem is that as a society, we are just catering to those individuals that want to live in America and choose not to speak English. I resent it. I resent having to click 1 for English and 2 for Spanish. If we stopped catering to the people that refuse to learn English, they would be forced to learn it. I guess what I do for a living has made me sour on this topic. Every single day I am on the phone with someone that says, "Spanish"? When I tell them, "English", they cannot speak to me. How can you be immersed in an English speaking society and not retain enough to carry on a very basic conversation. I don't feel as if I am the ignorant person in this situation.

It is obnoxious to be here in the USA, English speaking USA, and go anywhere nowadays and have to be bombarded with everything in Spanish. They need to learn English in order to get along in an English speaking country, it's that simple.
We haven't made it an issue that Spanish speaking people feel compelled to learn in order to navigate, that is our own foolishness. Enabling anyone is not an act of kindness, it's wrong. I don't like Walmart because they outsource to China.
I am all for making money here in the USA, just don't outsource, that's not American.

Walmart is one of the major companies responsible for destroying the manufacturing base in our country....the textile industry in our country tanked due to imports from other countries...All major apparel companies/sports companies-have factories overseas now.China, Sri Lanka)...do you want me to name the companies.(Nike, New Balance, Sara Lee..yes, they have a major financial holding in clothing)...With the export of our textile manufacturing base-other industries tanked also...trucking, yarn companies, packaging..Corporate policies and greed...read "Nickled and Dimed"...than decide if you want to shop in Walmart

Yes, I remember the day the folks from Wal-Mart came to my house and started forcing me at gun point to purchase cheap, imported goods from their stores. Oh wait, no I did that of my own free will. Wal-Mart is guilty of selling people what they wanted. They grew huge because of the consumers unending hunger for cheap crap. Long ago we as a nation decided it was better to buy cheaper products than it was to pay a bit more and support American business and workers. American worker's also forced our hands in making such purchases by demanding wages and benefits that pushed the cost of what they made to unrealistic levels and made it impossible for American companies to compete. Now, our buying choices are easy, because there are hardly any American made products left. WE destroyed the manufacturing base in our country, Wal-Mart and other like corporations were simply smart enough to see what we wanted and fill that need.

The economy and waltmart are some other issues that don't pertain anything to do with language. Let me just say this for all of those that talking about race, Do you believe in God? If yes, don't forget that Jesus is an immigrant too, he is a jew, and if you believe in God then you already accept it that Jesus didn't come to you by accident, or have you not understand him yet because he is speaking Hebrew?
The economy and waltmart are some other issues that don't pertain anything to do with language. Hipocrats!

The comments on this topic sound like they have come from the 1960s. Different languages and races have been in our country since we came here and annihilated the humans whose country it was before us. Have we not learned a thing?
For those who say speak the language or get out---you are living in fear. Do you think you just might be the last english speaking person left and no one will understand you? What specifically are you afraid of?
Look in the mirror and love yourself more. You are spewing hate and intolerance for people who are different than you. Maybe a better word for your attitude is Bigotry.
Please help the cause and open your mind, evolve and wake up to humanity!
Stop posting hate and anger on this board.
Find something to love, appreciate or be grateful for.
Trust me it will feel good. Isn't that what you really want?

Hate and bigotry and intolerance are YOUR words. Keep it that way!!!
People who come to the USA KNOW that they won't be able to navigate without
the understanding of the ENGLISH language before they come here.
It's complete arrogance to defy the rules of society so that they do not have to
assimilate and fit in. Flip this bigotry around and you will visit the bigotry and hate of those who come here and do absolutely nothing to blend into the American fabric.
Speak the native tongue at home or at family parties, but in the American community the language is ENGLISH, the rest is all Babel.
Bill Abbott

Irene what are specifically you afraid of? Seriously in your mind whats the worst case scenario of letting people speak whatever language they want?
"Flip the bigotry"...are you suggesting answer bigotry with bigotry?
What gives you the right to speak for people who come to the usa?
What do you do to blend in to or help the American fabric?
No one is "defying the rules of society" as there are no rules regarding what language to speak.
How many languages you speak?
I only speak 2 and it would be great if I knew more as this world is a big great place.
The only reason its "babel" to you is that you do not understand it and that's ok. There are plenty of kind people of all races willing to help.
