Good Sam's Mid-Track Program Trims Emergency Wait Times

Mid-Track Program is designed to reduce waiting time and improve quality of health care.

One of the major problems that hospitals face nationwide is overcrowding in their emergency departments.  Managing the increasing volume of patients is a full-time job for the employees, and a potentially very serious problem.  As a result, the patients can suffer in quality of care, health care access and safety.

Good Samaritan Hospital has made it a point to come up with a systematic solution to this issue.  Since 2008, they have developed a program called the "Mid-Track Program."

Dr. Adhi Sharma, chair of emergency medicine at Good Samaritan, said the Mid-Track project is a proven solution which has increased patient satisfaction and dcreased LWBS (left without being seen) patients by 50 percent.

According to the hospital, the program has a physician dedicated to managing the diagnostic phase for patients, directly after triage in the ED (Emergency Department).  Mid-Track patients are then treated in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit; which is specifically reserved for them.

The hospital described mid-track pateints as not too serioulsy injured where they need to be placed ahead of others, but not suffering from injuries too minor.
