Former Lions LAX Stars Set For 2013 NCAA Season

West Islip grads part of rosters for Top-20 college teams.

The college lacrosse season is on the horizon and the pre-season Top-20 from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) features several teams that include former West Islip High School lacrosse stars.

Among the squads ranked to start the season with former Lions on their rosters are Duke, Kyle Turri (ranked No. 6); Denver, Tom Moore (No. 9); Colgate, Connor Braddish (No. 10); Syracuse, Nicky Galasso (No. 13); Fairfield, Drew Federico (No. 16); and Yale, Michael McCormack (No. 17).

Below is a look at each player as the head into the 2013 season.

• Kyle Turri, Sophomore, Goaltender, Duke

Turri helped lead the United States Under-19 team to the 2012 FIL World Championship gold medal, playing in every game and getting two starts. He finished the tournament with 24 saves and a 6.42 goals against average in his seven games.

During his freshman year at Duke, Turri played in eight games and started three. He earned his first career start against Penn and posted seven saves, one ground ball and one caused turnover in the win over the Quakers. In addition, he had a season-high eight saves against Maryland and stopped five shots in a victory over Jacksonville.

• Tom Moore, Attack, Freshman, Denver

Moore is in his first season at Denver. At West Islip he helped lead the team to the 2012 NYS Class A Championship. He selected Denver because of the academics, the coaching staff, the location and the chance to win a National Championship. Moore was also recruited by Brown, Marquette, Stony Brook and Jacksonville.

• Connor Braddish, Midfielder, Sophomore, Colgate

During his freshman year, Braddish played in 16 of the team's 18 games and finished the season with five points (4G, 1A). Played in his first college game in Colgate’s 10-8 win over Bryant in the 2012 season opener. He had his first multi-point game with two points off his first collegiate goal and assist in the Raiders' 24-14 win over Robert Morris on March 3.

Braddish also netted goals in the wins over Binghamton on March 13, Army on March 31, and No. 1 UMass in the NCAA First Round on May 12.

• Drew Federico, Attack/Midfield, Sophomore, Fairfield

During his freshman year, Federico was named to the All-ECAC Rookie Team, playing in every game during the 2012 season, starting 13. He finished his freshman year with 17 points (8G, 9A).  He had a goal and an assist in his college debut versus Stony Brook and followed that with his first college multi-goal game in a win over Bryant. His season-high came against Quinnipiac as he netted a goal and three assists for four points. 

Michael McCormack, Defense, Senior, Yale

In 2012, McCormack was named Second-Team All Ivy League and First Team All-New England. He was second on the team with 55 ground balls and led Yale with 34 caused turnovers. He scored three goals and seven points. McCormack was named captain for 2012-13.
