Fall Sports Recap Part I

A look back at the first varsity season of the 2011-12 school year.

It was another tremendous fall season for WI varsity sports programs. Several teams made deep postseason runs including a Class AA Suffolk Championship appearance by boys soccer.

Let's take a look at how some of the teams fared:

Editor's Note: This is a two part series.  Look for Part II tomorrow morning.

Boys Soccer

Record: 16-2-2

The Lions were able to reach the the Suffolk finals game, but were once again ousted by Brentwood (who went on to win their fourth consecutive county title).  Sean Sepe led the team with 18 goals and Sean McAllister tallied a remarkable 124 saves.

Girls Soccer

Record: 15-4

The nationally-ranked girls team was able to make another deep postseason run under coach Nick Greico.  Unfortunately, they ran into a brick wall in top-seeded Ward Melville in the county semifinals.  Amanda Martinez led all Suffolk players in goals with 21.

Football

Record: 7-2

A lot of hope was surrounding West Islip heading into the playoffs.  They only lost one game in the regular season and received a three-seed.  However, Sachem East (who the Lions crushed in mid-October) came in looking for revenge and that's exactly what they got.

Girls Gymnastics

Record: 7-2

The girls gymnastics team is celebrating a League II Championship after a stellar season. Led by head coach Karyn Storan, the team featured four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and two middle Udall students.

Boys Golf

Record: 7-2

Coach George Botsch has taken the golf program to new heights in recent years, including the 2011 season.  Senior Jon Reese, who's committed to Yale, highlighted the season with his first hole-in-one at Timber Point in late October.
