An Unusual Bird Sighting in West Islip
A hawk makes a lunch-time stop on Jefferson Ave. mid-day Tuesday.
West Islip residents are used to the sight of sparrows, blue jays and cardinals. But a hawk was spotted on Jefferson Ave. Tuesday afternoon. Seen on a homeowners fence, the hawk had an unlucky squirrel in its claws.
While Patch editors have many skills, we're not experts in knowing what type of hawk this is. If you're familiar with this type of bird, let us know in our comments section below.
And if our readers see something unique or unusual around West Islip, feel free to share your photos by uploading them to the site or by e-mailing them to local editor A.J. Voelpel at anthonyv@patch.com

I think it is a Cooper's Hawk, inside of tail is white and back striped. It comes to visit my back yard and I yell to make it fly away. Visited before 7am today. Did you hear me yell?

Thanks for all the feedback! For those living near the water, these birds may be more common. But for those of us living inland, it definitely a rare sight.

We have Cooper's hawks here in Babylon all the time & have for years. They are similar in looks but Cooper's have a much longer tail & the Red tail juvenile will have the white patch on the chest. This is a Red Tail for sure.

Ditto. We see hawks all the time and we don't live near the water either. A friend of mine used to raise pigeons and the hawks were always picking them off. They don't scare off easily either.
